We aren't in Kansas anymore.

As a child, I watched the Wizard of Oz and was in awe when Dorothy's house was picked up by a tornado. I have had nightmares about tornados, but honestly, never once have I thought that I would experience one so very close to me.

On Wednesday at about 4:30pm, an hour after I picked up the boys from the bus stop, we started hearing some rain and it quickly turned to hail and the hail just kept getting bigger and bigger. Honestly, some were almost the size of golf balls. I had been in a really bad hail storm in Idaho, so I wasn't very worried. When I was a kid, we used to sit on the porch and watch and listen to the thunder and rain storms. I loved it! At 4:45, Aaron started asking how our weather was. He proceeded to tell me that a tornado touched down right near his work. He said that a co-worker could not even open the door to get out because of the strength of the wind. After the wind and storm had calmed there, another co-worker told him that the tornado was headed for our community of Wilbraham. He then told everyone that he was leaving and told me to take the boys to the basement away from windows. At home, I calmly told the children that we were going to go downstairs because of the storm. The power went out in the middle of all that. My phone battery was low and I couldn't recharge it. I was so worried about Aaron getting home and that I would not be able to talk to him. My fears came to pass. As we hid ourselves in the most central lowest part of the basement, away from the windows, I silently prayed. We huddled up close to eachother and listened to a crank radio, as Sterling cranked. I tried to charge my phone on the battery that was left from the laptop. My phone would come on for a minute or two and I would get a message or two from Aaron, and then I would lose power again. He told me that he couldn't get home, and that there were lots of trees down and roads blocked. He then said that he was headed for Boston Rd. Then I lost him. As we listened to the radio, they said that the tornado was headed for Boston Rd. I cannot even begin to describe the utter panic that welled up inside of me. I tried to control my emotions as much as I could for the boys, but it was too late. So, the boys were beginning to understand the seriousness of the situation from the radio and from me and they cried. I asked Damian to pray. Amazingly calm in that moment, he uttered a simply and faithful prayer to Heavenly Father for our dad and husband. He always is our little spiritual rock in our home. He has great faith in God. After the prayer, my words to them were very optimistic and hopeful, but I couldn't help thinking about all the worst case scenarios. However, I think that my external optimism helped my internal fears subside. At some point I received a message from my phone when it came on briefly saying that Aaron was walking home. That was scary too. He told me that he was down the hill from us and needed me to come get him. That message was sent at 7:40. I got it at 8:40. I got the kids out of their sleeping bags (the tornado warning from the radio was until 9). We ran out the door in the rain to get Aaron. As we drove down the road from our home, there were power lines down and trees down blocking our path. The rain was coming down uncontrollably and I had to turn around. As soon as we got home, I got the kids back down in the basement and started charging my phone in the van. I called my mom and Aaron's mom to see if either of them had heard from him. I assumed though, that his phone battery was dead too. After about 15 or 20 minutes, I saw headlights come up our road. It wasn't our car, but I knew it was him. It was quite the emotional and scary experience. He had been walking about 3 miles, part of which was uphill and climbing over big trees to get home. He hitched a ride with a couple of passerbys. I was so happy to see him.

Our community had a lot of big trees go down and a lot of power lines. There was also a pretty good amount of structural damage. We lost power for a little over 24 hours and didn't have running water either, but we are very grateful to be alive. It was much worse for so many in Springfield and in our community and surrounding communities. I learned a lot of valuable lessons about being prepared. We had some things, but definitely not all the things we needed. I will be making a list of things we thought of having after. I will be posting this soon on our blog, so watch for it.

Here are some photos of during the storm and after:

This is a picture of the Connecticut River being picked up by the tornado. Aaron's office is really close to the river and he saw it go by the Basketball Fame building where he works.

This is a church in Monson. We live on the border of Wilbraham and Monson.

These pictures don't even begin to paint a picture of the devastation in Springfield and the surrounding areas. We are grateful for support from family and friends and pray for those less fortunate than us.

One little two little three little indians

This is what I found on my couch. I didn't encourage this. This was his idea.

Birthday # 8. Wow!

These are just a few silly pictures of the 8 year old, Zachary, on his big day! We are super excited for him to get baptized in a couple of weeks. What a handsome boy!

Snow Days

Four snow days in the last two weeks are not necessarily good for my morale. That is bad to say, isn't it?

Scary!

Leaf blower, courtesy of the Yeager family. Yeah, thanks Yeagers! We had to suffer from Aarons fascination of blowing leaves this past fall. I think someone moved here just for the New England fall and to play in the leaves with the leaf blower. I should have gotten him one for his birthday.

Pumpkin Carving and Halloween! Booooooooo!

The boys had fun carving pumpkins while my family was here, with the exception of Sterling. He decided not to carve his and instead he played in his room (for those of you who know him, it shouldn't be a surprise.)
I would just like to say that Zachary started out with the knife, I believe. In this picture, the right person has it :) Actually, I think Zach did a pretty good job with some supervision by his grandpa Virtue. His expression says it all!

A little pumkin for a little boy. This is his fake smile. Gotta love it!
Tomy and Grandma make a great team. Grandma looks a bit intense. Pumpkin surgery is serious.

Halloween this year was so fun because my boys, for the most part were very creative in choosing their costumes. Left to right: Hippie (Tomy), Ninja (Zach), Frodo (Sterling), and Santa (Damian). Zach was going to be an army soldier and I think that would have made it an even more interesting mix. I had some fun pulling costumes together this year, even though it is slightly stressful. Hopefully next Halloween we can live up to the standard of last.

The Virtues visit New England (sounds like a book title)

It is always joyous when I get to see my family because I do not get to see them very often now that we are Easterners (bleh). This visit was especially exciting because Michelle and my mom and dad came over my birthday in October (still playing catch up. Remember?) Anyway, we had such a good time and they got to see the house and stay with us. I thought it was fun to have them stay in our home. Not sure how they felt about it deep down, but they at least seemed like they enjoyed staying:)
You know the song in Mary Poppins that goes:
It's a jolly holiday with Mary?

Well, when Mickey comes, it's a jolly holiday with Mickey! She is magical with not only the kids, but with me:) I love her.

Mary and I posing for a close up. We look alike, huh? I love her sooooo much!

My mom says that she knew Damian in the preexistence. I believe her. He is so blessed to have such good grandmas.

I think my boys love my dad (I think he loves them too) and I am grateful that they do because he is such a good man and good example for them. He sure knows how to have a good time with them too! He took each of them on walks and hiked a bit near our house (I think he took the hike to see a nearby monster of a house.) He also rolled around in the leaves and carved pumpkins. What a guy!

Damian's First Day of School with his brothers

*Just so you all know, I am playing catch up and when I tried to do one big long post earlier today, I lost all of it. I worked hard on it too. Tears are falling down my cheek as I type this.

This is Damian's first day of kindergarten. He loved to get on the bus with his brothers! Doesn't he look sharp?

Relocated

I was frightened to go through a summer with just me and four boys. It would be a first for me. And now I miss summer. We had a good time. Not to say there wasn't rough times, but we conquered summer and had fun doing so. Here are some highlights.

Aaron's Parents came and we went to the beach with Kathy and Pete. And yes, my children like to give me bunny ears.

We went to the Springfield Museum for the Art of Brick. The boys loved it! I think Aaron's mom and dad loved it too:)

We also went peach picking with our friends the Yeagers.

Oh, and did I forgot to mention that we bought a home and moved? We love our new home. We have been very busy furnishing it and painting and working on a table that I got a great deal on at a antique fair. It arrived at our house with some help from some of our friends, the Ackermans. We have been blessed with great friends. Look for some before and after pics of this project. Aaron and I should make our own show.

Potato chips bring boys and men together

I found this picture on my sister Michelle's blog and had to smile because I would like to go to that place again where all of this happened and be with all the people I love.

What we did on our vacation away from blogging

We have made lots of new friends.

The boys had a winter break where we traveled to the Armory. I have to face reality. Most boys like guns. So I embraced it. Here is Sterling next to the gun that he thought was the coolest.

The mall had a sandbox during winter break that some women in the ward told me about. The boys love to dig. I'm happy as long as they aren't digging up the backyard.

Tomy recently got some glasses. I think he looks stylish and handsome. He doesn't really wanna hear that. He wants to hear that he looks "cool".

Damian, "the baby" turned five. There were tears. We can't believe he is so old. He is hilarious. Such a little man now.

Zachary had some of his friends from school and church for his 7th birthday. And yes, there were girls. Are you surprised? We aren't. They like him because he is such a little gentleman. He likes them too.

Here is the man who has the biggest smile ever.

Last but not least, we are buying a home. Stayed tuned for pictures of the house. We are pretty excited.

9 months is a long time...

Contemplation

The last couple weeks have made me think a lot about the Atonement and how we deal with tragedy in our lives. We have lived in MA for about 8 months now and have made a lot of new friends. About 2 weeks ago, one of our new friends lost both her parents. Almost the same day, another couple, also friends(and our Bishop) lost their 7 day old baby girl. Last Sunday while we sang the Sacrament hymn, my thoughts were brought to think about the Savior and his Atonement. As I have for quite some time known, but was very much reminded of by the spirit during that song, the Atonement does not only apply to a forgiveness of sins. Christ suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane in order to also take away our sorrow and pain from tribulation. Today, the Bishop was conducting and therefore had the opportunity to bear his testimony. He and his wife are amazing people. They are very much in tune with the Spirit and know our Father's plan for us. While the Bishop was bearing his testimony, sharing that even though they are sad for their loss, he and his wife also know that their little girl is with our Father in Heaven. He expressed his comfort in knowing that his family will be reunited some day and that thought brought him joy. As he spoke I couldn't help but think about Nephi's Psalm found in 2 Nephi chapter 4. At this time in Nephi's life he has just lost his father and mother, his brothers basically hate him and he is feeling weighed down by the hardships in his life. As he talks of these feelings, he realizes the goodness and love and mercy God has for us and it brings him out of his despair to in verse 30 proclaim "Rejoice, O my heart, and cry unto the Lord, and say: O Lord, I will praise thee forever; yea, my soul will rejoice in thee, my God, and the rock of my salvation." Just like Nephi, our Bishop and his wife, our dear friends, rejoice in the Lord and know that he has done all for us so that we may once again live as families for eternity.

Visitors

I thoughtlessly forgot to mention the best part of our lives here in MA. Last Nov, the 12th thru the 18th to be exact. We had 3 special visitors. Their names are Mike, Mary Lou and Mickey. We had a lot of fun and got to do lots of fun things.

Then on Jan 21st we got another visitor. Her name is Pataroo. Again we had a great time and we went and visited the Dr Seuss garden. It was a blast.

Sorry to our very special visitors for not mentioning you earlier. We miss all of you as well as those who could not come. We love you.

Finally an Update

Well a lot has happened since we last updated our blog. We have not been as diligent because since our last post, Damian, the little bug, stood on the laptop and ruined the screen. It is not difficult but rather inconvenient to go upstairs and use the desktop pc.

First we had October. In October, Kimberly took the boys to a pumpkin patch. They had a great time and got to bring back a bunch of gourds and small pumpkins.

Of course Halloween is in October as well. Sterling unfortunately had a bout with the flu on Halloween so he stayed home and did not dress up, but the other 3 had a ball and Tomy even took a bag around to all the houses so that Sterling would get candy too. What a good Brother.

In November we celebrated Tomy's birthday with a big party bash. He had cake and ice cream and lots of fun.

In early December we got our first real New England snow storm. It dumped about 4 inches of snow and they shut down the schools. Go figure.
On the 23rd of December we made a trip down to see Aunt Kathy...

and go into The Big Apple. We had a great time in New York City too. We visited an amazing toy store, FAO Swartz. The same toy store that "Big" was filmed in.

This statue of Chewbacka is made entirely out of Legos. Pretty darn cool.

Of course Mommy had to have her picture taken with all the animals...

And so did Daddy.

Nothing like standing next to a life sized bear and deer. This store is cool.

We saw a pretty cool big Christmas tree...

and the Plaza hotel. A must see location for any "Home Alone" enthusiast.

And what would a trip to New York be without visiting the world famous Rockefeller Center and see the magnificent Christmas tree there.

It is so unbelievably amazing. Words cannot describe what it is like to go to New York and experience that.

And of course, December culminates in Christmas day itself. Here are the crazy boys, standing next to our tree, all wearing their brand new sweaters. They all look so handsome.

Well that is the last 3 months is a very small nutshell. It has been a very good time and we really enjoyed it but it would simply take too long to share every little detail lol.
